Thursday, September 29th, 2011

to kill a mickingbirdThe summer went all too fast and now it’s back to school for millions of children.

In Boulder, super-teacher Debbie Valette has been busy getting things back up and running with her excellent reading program for those kids that have fallen behind. Then again, it’s not as if she abandoned them during the summer either.

Debbie spent some valuable time with her students during the break, making sure that their new found love of reading didn’t disappear during the summer. Check out ‘Reading Lunch a success – Part 1’.

She got in touch this week to let us know that things are getting underway agian, with plans to take her class to see a play of their class-book, ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’. Read the rest of this entry »

Reading Lunch Success – Chapter 2

Tuesday, August 9th, 2011

debbies readers in bookstoreLast week, teacher Debbie Valette took us through an interesting lunch date with some of her reading students and how the experience helped them hone their newly gained reading skills in the real world.

It also gave them a chance to discuss the books they are currently reading and also a wide range of topics that those books presented to them. You can catch up on that here – Reading Lunch A Success – Chapter 1″

Here’s what happened after lunch:

“From there we headed to Boulder’s only local bookstore to find a new read [see photo].

I attached a couple of pictures of the girls looking for books. We finally found one we could all agree on. It’s called Illegal by Bettina Restrepo.

Reading Lunch A Success – Chapter 1

debbie and lunch trip

When teaching kids with reading difficulties how to read, it doesn’t always have to be in a class-related environment. In fact, there are a wealth of skills that budding readers can learn outside of the class, especially how valuable reading can be in a real-world situation.

Our favorite teaching guru, Debbie Valette, in Boulder Colorado, takes time out to bring some of her readers out and about during the summer break, to see how they cope in the real world. She was in contact recently to let us in on how one of her summer lunch trips went.

Hi, I hope all is well with you!  We’ve been having a great summer. I met with my two motivated summer readers yesterday.  We met at a fancy restaurant called Q’s where we had the tasting menu: chilled pea soup with creme fraiche, trout on a bed of poblano hash with mole sauce, and a variety of yummy desserts.  The girls especially liked the creme fraiche!  (They said it tasted like ranch dressing!) The pea soup was a little challenging for them, but they loved everything else.

The lunch went splendidly – so many teachable moments. They learned new food-related words, how to calculate…. Read the rest of this entry »

How Reading Changes Children’s Lives

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

debbies readers 2Last week, we read about how Debbie Valette’s unique reading program at the Centennial Middle school in Boulder, Colorado, is working wonders in helping kids leap grades they would have otherwise failed to clear. Debbie’s program is one of the most rewarding projects we have been proud to support at Catalyst Exhibits.

Debbie sent us some feedback from some those of she’s been working with – a personal take on how reading is now a huge part of their lives.

“The kids have had many success stories this year:

Maria stayed for 30 minutes past the time that the afterschool class ended to finish the book she was reading. She read for 70 minutes straight. That is unheard of for a struggling reader. Thanks for allowing me to put books in her hands that she loves.

Lewis told me that he could read for 30 minutes now on his own. He started the year hating reading and refused to read a book. I got him hooked on Playaways and…..”

Sports Star Becomes Reading Star – Part 2

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

recorded booksLast week, we reported on how Debbie Valette’s ground-breaking reading program had done wonders for one school wrestler, Lewis, who was having lots of trouble getting to grips with reading.

Thanks to her use of ‘recorded books’ on CDs or via the iPod, Lewis has taken to reading along with the recorded books like a duck to water. Setting the reading speed at its lowest setting, he has been able to follow the words on the page as their are spoken. Since then, it’s been hard to pry him away from books.

And it doesn’t stop there, since Debbie has managed to get other departments in the school interested. Here’s what she says:

Sports Star Becomes Reading Star

Friday, February 4th, 2011

debbies wrestlerFalling behind in school can spell the end for a decent education by the time you leave. Debbie Valette has been doing outstanding work helping those with poor reading skills at her school in Boulder, Colorado, catch back up with – and even surpass – their classmates.

We’ve been proud here at Catalyst Exhibits to play our roll in helping support her efforts.

Debbie was in touch this week to fill us in on the reading success of one school wrestler who has, for some time, being wrestling with reading and writing difficulties. Here’s the first part of her update.

Sorry I haven’t gotten back to you.  I’ve been waiting to take a picture of one student in particular.  He is on the wrestling team and has been in and out between practice and meets.  I will be out tomorrow at a conference, but I will take a picture of him on Wednesday.

Back To School For Cameroon’s Children

Tuesday, October 5th, 2010

jinkfuin school 1Summer has passed and classrooms around the world are again filled with children [mostly] eager to learn.

The same is especially true for the Jinkfuin school in Cameroon which is one of the projects that Catalyst Exhibits has been helping to fund through GMMAfrica. Without that funding, the school would not exist and the children would remain largely uneducated.

Teh Francis, a director at  GMMAfrica, has sent us some photos of the school classroom back in action – the quality’s not great but it’s the thought  - and the kids – that counts.

“It has been now some weeks since the re-opening of the schools and things have been going fine with the children we sponsor at the elementary schools and in colleges. “

Jump now for more.

Troubled Readers Ace State Exams

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

kids readingExams suck! Most school kids would agree but it’s even harder for kids that have fallen behind their class.

Debbie Valette’s special reading program for just such school kids in Boulder, Colorado, is one of our favourite charities here at Catalyst Exhibits and she’s been in touch to let us know how her students have fared in the state reading test, or CSAP (Colorado Student Assessment Program). We are delighted to report that the news was very good indeed.

Summer Reading Vital For Problem Readers

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

debbies class 3Debbie Valette’s unique reading programme for 12-14-year olds in Boulder, Colorado, has made great strides in getting kids with serious reading problems back on track.

The recent feedback from the kids has been amazing and according to Debbie her programme has seen 99% of her students scoring higher on the GRADE test and the DRA2 fluency test.

Students made gains of 1.5 to 2.5 years in reading. Debbie’s been in touch to let us know what’s been happening this summer and said:

“All of you at Catalyst Exhibits can feel great about being part of these kids’ growth. “If I weren’t able to keep my kids supplied with appropriate books, I would not have been able to keep them engaged. Thanks so much!!”
